Organic Dry Premium Riesling
Riesling Trocken (VDP.ERSTE LAGE, sandy limestone soils, warm site, 5.5g/L residual sugar)
Pfalz, Deidesheim, GERMANY
A significant step up in complexity and terroir expression, the Königsbacher Ölberg Riesling is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE (Premier Cru), representing one of Von Winning's finest single-vineyard sites. The Ölberg vineyard in Königsbach is characterized by sandy limestone soils and a warm exposition, producing Rieslings of power, richness, and distinctive mineral character.
This wine ferments spontaneously in 500L French oak barrels, adding subtle texture and complexity. Winemaker Stephan Attmann's "controlled neglect" philosophy means minimal intervention in the cellar: no pumps (gravity flow only), no fining agents, and minimal clarification. The result is a wine of pristine purity and intense expression of place.
At 5.5g/L residual sugar, this is a Premium dry (trocken) Riesling with just enough natural sweetness to balance the wine's vibrant acidity and intensity. The palate shows layers of ripe peach, Meyer lemon, white flowers, and wet stone minerality, with a creamy texture interplaying with electric acidity. The finish is dry long, tense, and invigorating simultaneously juicy, full-bodied, and firm.
The 2021 vintage has had time to develop beautiful tertiary nuances: honeyed notes, petrol, beeswax, and deeper mineral complexity. This is Riesling with real cellaring potential, capable of evolving gracefully for another 5-10 years.
Pair with lobster thermidor, roasted chicken with lemon and herbs, seared scallops, or creamy risotto. Serve at 10-12°C to appreciate its full aromatic and textural complexity. A wine that showcases why German Riesling remains one of the world's greatest wine styles.
