Biodynamic southern Rhône red
Mourvèdre & Grenache
Visan, Côtes du Rhône, FRANCE
Matthieu Barret is best known as one of the leading biodynamic growers of Cornas in the northern Rhône. With Zin Zin he heads south to Visan in the Côtes du Rhône, blending Mourvèdre and Grenache into a red that is all about pleasure and drinkability.
The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and the wine spends 9 months on its lees in concrete, building texture and depth without any oak flavour getting in the way of the fruit. Sulfur is kept to a minimum, so what you taste is the vineyard and the season.
Grenache brings the juicy red fruit and warmth, while Mourvèdre adds darker fruit, spice and a savoury, slightly meaty edge. In the glass expect dark cherry, blackberry and plum, with garrigue herbs, black pepper and a hint of earth. Medium-bodied and supple, with soft, fine tannins and a fresh, moreish finish.
A southern Rhône red with real energy. Generous enough for a Tuesday night, interesting enough for a dinner party.
Serve at 14-16°C with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, Toulouse sausages, duck confit, ratatouille or a cheese board. Give it 15 minutes in the fridge on a warm day.
