Vilain, the sneaky guy of Matthieu Barret's collection of wines, is all spicy Syrah that swishes into the glass like a red dress at a nightclub. The grapes come from two terroirs: De Roussas in Drôme, where the soil is mostly sandy; and from the granite sands of Eclassan, in the plateau Ardéchois at 400 metres above sea level. Crunchy, spicy, broody, maraschino cherries, dried thyme and crushed black pepper. Rich and full bodied, have a big delicious hearty meal next to it; duck, cotechino or maybe even beef pie.  Matthieu Barret is part of the new wave of Cornas winemakers building upon a rich history of the world-class Syrah. He has a superb group of appellations from the northern Rhône Valley, Cornas, and Ardeche.
