Gilles Lapalus is a well-respected Central VIC winemaker who sadly recently lost his entire winery in January this year to the bushfires in Harcourt VIC. These are some of his last remaining wines before he gradually starts to make his return to winemaking, some of his new blends will be up here on our shop soon!

A layered and expressive take on Heathcote reds, Historical by Giles Lapalus brings together a blend of classic varieties with a thoughtful, minimal intervention approach. Built around Syrah, with support from Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Nebbiolo, this is a wine that leans into structure, depth and quiet complexity.

Sourced from organic vineyards across Heathcote’s mineral rich soils, the wine is fermented with a light touch before spending 18 months in seasoned hogshead barrels. The use of older oak keeps the focus on fruit and texture, allowing each variety to play its role without dominance. The result is a wine that feels both grounded and balanced, with a natural sense of cohesion.

Dark plum, blackberry and cassis lead into savoury spice, dried herbs and a touch of earth. There is a gentle grip from the Nebbiolo, structure from the Cabernet and warmth from the Syrah, all held together by fresh acidity and a smooth, rounded finish.

A versatile and quietly serious red that speaks to both place and blend. One for cooler evenings, shared tables and dishes with a bit of weight.

Pair with slow cooked lamb, grilled steak, mushroom ragù or aged hard cheeses.
