DUCKMAN "Kite Duck" 2021

Baga & Maria Gomes

"blanc de noir" & orange wine, aged in 650ml French Oak

Bairrada, PORTUGAL

Duckman’s ‘Kite Duck’ is a white wine made by taking the juice of red grapes before it has any skin contact (95% Baga) and macerating with the skins of white varieties (5% Maria Gomes).  Is it an orange? A white? Who knows? Who cares? The real fact of the matter is that it is a direct reference to the wines of the old days, made in a way that people would have made their wines for their home consumption after a long day working the land. It is built for refreshment, but there’s a sweaty, passionate kiss of funk in there, Ribery, lillypilly, hibiscus…how’d they get all those Australian natives in there so far across the world? Serve ice cold to prompt conversation at a blind tasting, or get your fun flirtatious self off the ground during a hot date.

The Duckman wines express the true character of Bairrada’s indigenous varieties and the esoteric quality of the seashore. There are no indications of the region on the labels, done intentionally to demonstrate an acute sense of place and varietal typicality through minimal intervention in the cellar. Only the indigenous varietals can be Bairrada wine, and the wines are more often than not extremely low in alcohol.
