Organic premium wine from ancient Umbrian terroir
Sangiovese ‘Grosso Brunello’ grape (replanted Tuscan vines, 15 days maceration, fiberglass aging)
Umbria, Magione, ITALY
A powerful expression of Umbria's winemaking heritage, the Estrusco is Della Staffa's homage to the ancient Etruscan civilization that once thrived in this region. Crafted by winemaker Danilo Marcucci from replanted Sangiovese Grosso vines (the same clone used in Brunello di Montalcino), this wine bridges historical tradition with natural winemaking philosophy.
The estate's 12 hectares of up to 70-year-old vines in Monte Melino have never been treated with chemicals, creating an organic foundation for these expressive wines. The Estrusco undergoes semi carbonic ferment, then 15 days of maceration on skins, then ages in fiberglass vessels to preserve purity and freshness. Made with spontaneous fermentation, no filtration, and no sulfur, allowing for a classic structure with a slight rustic but elegant charm.
Red berries, crushed violets, wild Morello cherry, hints of ground black & red pepper, with a soft tannic backbone & classic Sangiovese acidity.
Della Staffa was once the most important social cantina in the Trasimeno-Perugino area in its heyday of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, Danilo revives this legacy with natural wines that honor both the land and the family's ancestral connection to it.
Pair with grilled steaks, wild boar ragu, aged pecorino, or hearty bean and sausage dishes. Best with a slight “chill down” before enjoying this wine.
