Feel like drinking like a local? Look no further. Roero, north of Alba, is one of the most discreet small appellations in Piedmont, quietly producing some of the best wines in the world. Mario Roagna took over the family farm in 1995: he then devoted it to viticulture and then made the choice, with his son Giovanni, of organic farming and biodynamic practices. Italy’s third most widely planted varietal, Barbera, is a workhorse grape, yielding copious amounts of juicy, vibrant fruit, with many of the best examples hailing from Barbera d’Alba in Northern Piedmont. Ideally situated, Cascina Val del Prete’s organically farmed vines are on South facing slopes of a natural amphitheatre-shaped area, perfect for ripening Barbera to the pinnacle of ripeness. Bright, fresh, yet with depth; pure and lighthearted. Just great wine really.
