Roero, north of Alba, is one of the most discreet small appellations in Piedmont, quietly producing some of the best wines in the world. The “farm” Val del Prete is magnificently located in a natural amphitheatre in Priocca, a village in the small Roero appellation, in the north of Alba, in Piedmont. Mario Roagna took over the family farm in 1995: he then devoted it to viticulture and then made the choice, with his son Giovanni, of organic farming and biodynamic practices. Arneis has a bad rep, for no reason at all other than its mishandling and commercial propagation, but when it’s taken care of, such as in this wine, the grape variety is a perfect character representation for the region. See it here as it should be, full of depth, texture and given some lees to enhance its body and complexity. An almost wild note, like a wheat beer or a scrumpy cider, surrounded by white peaches, white balsamic and fresh herbs from the garden. A wine to be drunk by pleasure seekers.
